The Off-Road Starter Bundle includes three pre-waxed chains, a bottle of premium wax-based lubricant, and a microfiber cloth. Due to the significantly harsher conditions of off-road cycling—whether on gravel, dirt, or technical trails—chain longevity is typically reduced by approximately 50% compared to road use. As such, this bundle includes an additional chain and follows a more frequent maintenance schedule.

The system operates on a biweekly rotation: use one chain for 15 days, then switch to a fresh one. At the end of the month, return the two used chains to us for professional cleaning and re-waxing. You may return the chain for cleaning by simply affixing the pre-paid return label to the included package. All necessary materials for return shipping are provided as part of your subscription, with no additional cost to you. We guarantee a 15-day turnaround, ensuring that you always have a clean, waxed chain available. Maintaining a two-week rotation cycle and a monthly service schedule keeps the process streamlined and efficient.

To maintain optimal chain performance and prevent premature wear in harsh off-road conditions, it is important to follow the correct lubrication schedule for your chain treatment. For Molten Speed Wax-treated chains, reapply the included wax-based lubricant every 200 kilometers or immediately after any wet ride.

For Silca-treated chains, reapplication is only necessary after 550 kilometers in dry off-road conditions, then every 200 kilometers thereafter, or immediately following any exposure to rain or road spray. Regular maintenance is essential for preserving drivetrain efficiency and extending component lifespan, especially in wet environments.

Designed for riders who frequent gravel, dirt, or mixed-terrain trails—primarily under dry conditions—this bundle functions similarly to the Road Bundle but accounts for the increased wear off-road riding imposes on chains. Chains are treated with Molten Speed Wax, delivering up to 1,000 kilometers of use before requiring retreatment, provided BananaSlip Tungsten All-Weather Lube is applied every 200 kilometers or immediately after any exposure to wet or muddy conditions.

Silca Off-Road Bundle

Chains in this bundle are coated with Silca’s Secret Chain Blend and a robust endurance wax. While operating under the same fundamental principles as the Road Bundle, the more aggressive off-road environment reduces the initial wax coating’s effective lifespan to approximately 400 kilometers. This bundle is optimized for riders covering close to 1,500 kilometers per month in tough off-road conditions.

For those encountering harsher weather or particularly dirty conditions, Silca’s endurance wax provides enhanced protection relative to Molten wax—especially when paired with regular applications of Silca’s SS Drip lubricant. To sustain chain performance, apply Silca SS Drip Lubricant after the initial 400 kilometers, then every 200 kilometers thereafter, or immediately following any wet ride.

Maintenance Recommendations

Regardless of your chosen bundle, consistent application of wax-based lubricant is essential. Regular lubrication preserves chain integrity, extends component life, and ensures optimal drivetrain performance between professional cleanings and re-waxing. Simply ride, maintain a disciplined lubrication schedule (every 200km or after every wet ride), and send your chains in for servicing to keep your bike running smoothly on all terrain.

Instructions

Step 1: Clean the Chain (for both lubes)

Before applying lubricant, it’s essential to remove any dirt, moisture, or contaminants from the chain. This ensures proper wax adhesion and optimal performance.

What you’ll need:

  • 99% isopropyl alcohol (available at most pharmacies or online)
  • A clean microfiber cloth
  • A small spray bottle (with which to spray the alcohol)

Instructions:

  1. Shift into a straight chainline: the middle of the cassette and the largest front chainring.

  2. Spray one full coat of isopropyl alcohol directly onto the chain while turning the cranks backward to cover the entire length.

  3. Lightly spray the alcohol onto a clean microfiber cloth.

  4. Hold the cloth at the bottom span of the chain (between the lower pulley and the crankset), and rotate the cranks backward 15–20 times, allowing the chain to pass through the alcohol-soaked cloth.

  5. Wait at least 5 minutes for the alcohol to fully evaporate and dry.

🔄 While the chain is drying, use this time to thoroughly shake your lube bottle.
 Both Silca SS Drip and BananaSlip Tungsten Lube contain wax and friction-reducing additives that settle over time—shaking ensures they're fully mixed and ready for use.

Step 2: Apply the Lube

  • Apply one drop to each roller (the small rotating pins between chain links).
  • Do this on the lower section of the chain, between the jockey wheels and chainrings.
  • Maintain a straight chainline (middle of cassette, large front chainring).
  • It's okay to use slightly more to ensure all rollers are evenly coated.

Step 3: Work the Lube Into the Chain

  1. In the same chain position, pinch the top and bottom of the chain with your fingers and rotate the cranks backward 15–20 times.

  2. Shift into the smallest front chainring and smallest rear cog, and backpedal 15–20 times.

  3. Then shift into the largest front ring and largest rear cog, and pedal forward (or backward, if your setup allows) 20 more times. This sequence helps distribute the lube thoroughly through the internal surfaces of the chain.

Step 4: Let It Cure and Remove Excess

  1. 🟨 BananaSlip: Let the chain dry for 10–15 minutes.
  2. 🟩 Silca SS Drip: Wipe off excess immediately after applying. Then allow it to cure for 24 hours before riding.
  3. Use a clean microfiber cloth to remove excess lube from:
  • The chain
  • The chainrings
  • The cassette
  • The pulley wheels
