These training chains are identical to those provided in our starter bundles and are available with your choice of Silca or Molten wax treatment. The chains themselves are universal across disciplines—equally suited for road and off-road use. The only distinction between the two starter bundle options lies in the number of chains included, not their specification.
We recommend replacing your training chains once your current chain has exceeded 0.5% wear, which typically occurs after approximately 16,000 kilometers under normal road use. Additionally, if you frequently ride in demanding off-road conditions, maintaining a rotation of pre-waxed chains can help optimize performance and drivetrain longevity.
For riders requiring a custom starter bundle with multiple waxed chains delivered each month, please reach out to us directly. We’re happy to offer bulk pricing and tailor the setup to match your riding volume and discipline.

Molten vs SILCA
The primary distinction between Silca and Molten wax lies in their durability and performance under demanding conditions. Silca wax offers extended longevity due to the inclusion of a proprietary endurance chip, which enhances protection during adverse weather and sustained efforts. While it comes at a higher cost, Silca is the preferred option for cyclists who frequently ride in the rain or undertake long-distance efforts.
To sustain chain performance on road, apply Silca Super Secret Drip Lubricant after the initial 750 kilometers, then every 200 kilometers thereafter, or immediately following any wet ride. For off-road use, apply the lubricant after the initial 400 kilometers, then every 200 kilometers thereafter, or after any wet or muddy ride.
In contrast, Molten wax is well-suited for riders who primarily train indoors or in consistently dry conditions. It can tolerate occasional exposure to moisture but lacks the advanced protection provided by Silca in wet or high-stress environments.
Regardless of which wax you select, consistent application of a wax-based drip lubricant is essential. It safeguards the chain, ensures optimal efficiency, and extends the time between full cleanings and re-waxing. Reapply the wax-based lubricant after every wet ride, 200 kilometers or whenever the chain begins to sound dry.
The following outlines each step of the process:
Wax Lubricant Application Guide:
Instructions
Step 1: Clean the Chain (for both lubes)
Before applying lubricant, it’s essential to remove any dirt, moisture, or contaminants from the chain. This ensures proper wax adhesion and optimal performance.
What you’ll need:
- 99% isopropyl alcohol (available at most pharmacies or online)
- A clean microfiber cloth
- A small spray bottle (with which to spray the alcohol)
Instructions:
- Shift into a straight chainline: the middle of the cassette and the largest front chainring.
- Spray one full coat of isopropyl alcohol directly onto the chain while turning the cranks backward to cover the entire length.
- Lightly spray the alcohol onto a clean microfiber cloth.
- Hold the cloth at the bottom span of the chain (between the lower pulley and the crankset), and rotate the cranks backward 15–20 times, allowing the chain to pass through the alcohol-soaked cloth.
- Wait at least 5 minutes for the alcohol to fully evaporate and dry.
🔄 While the chain is drying, use this time to thoroughly shake your lube bottle.
Both Silca SS Drip and BananaSlip Tungsten Lube contain wax and friction-reducing additives that settle over time—shaking ensures they're fully mixed and ready for use.
Step 2: Apply the Lube
- Apply one drop to each roller (the small rotating pins between chain links).
- Do this on the lower section of the chain, between the jockey wheels and chainrings.
- Maintain a straight chainline (middle of cassette, large front chainring).
- It's okay to use slightly more to ensure all rollers are evenly coated.
Step 3: Work the Lube Into the Chain
- In the same chain position, pinch the top and bottom of the chain with your fingers and rotate the cranks backward 15–20 times.
- Shift into the smallest front chainring and smallest rear cog, and backpedal 15–20 times.
- Then shift into the largest front ring and largest rear cog, and pedal forward (or backward, if your setup allows) 20 more times. This sequence helps distribute the lube thoroughly through the internal surfaces of the chain.
Step 4: Let It Cure and Remove Excess
- 🟨 BananaSlip: Let the chain dry for 10–15 minutes.
- 🟩 Silca SS Drip: Wipe off excess immediately after applying. Then allow it to cure for 24 hours before riding.
- Use a clean microfiber cloth to remove excess lube from:
- The chain
- The chainrings
- The cassette
- The pulley wheels
